Many Ubuntu users like unity desktop environment , and inversely many users don’t like that at all , most of the time they switch to classic mode or install some other desktop Environment like GNOME or KDE . today I am going to show you how to install mate and cinnamon desktop environment’s in Ubuntu .

Mate Desktop

Okay lets started with Mate Desktop
according to its website

” MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2 ” It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

How to Install

For Ubuntu 14.04 LTS users

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate

# Upgrading and Installing 

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-core ubuntu-mate-desktop

# For Some eXtra Sauce ;) 

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras

For Ubuntu 14.10 Users ( available in official Repositories )

<br />sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop

Now setup mate as your default desktop environment , in ubuntu edit /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-ubuntu.conf file and set mate in place of ubuntu .

sudo nano  /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-ubuntu.conf 

### replace ubuntu with mate 

or logout and choose mate from lightdm login window

Cinnamon Desktop

Cinnamon is , crispy and refreshing desktop environment from the developers of linux-mint . latest release is cinnamon 2,4 . in this version they polished and added many tweaks like zoom animation .
